The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA Serum

I know… I’m fucking obsessed with The Ordinary’s products; it’s not really a secret amirite?? ๐Ÿคฉ  After all the drama surrounding Deciem recently, I stocked up on all my favorite products from them (y’know… just in case the company imploded ๐Ÿ’ฅ) But ZOMG! Seriously… The Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA Serum is everything ๐Ÿ˜ฎ As someone who suffers from long lingering PIH (Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation) this serum is a Goddess send ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

So let’s get into it, shall we??

About the formula: it’s a slightly opaque viscous liquid with no discernible scent. It’s kind of sticky when first applied, but it dries down matte.

How I use it: 1-2x daily, using about a dropper full at a time (~7 drops). I prefer to mist my face before applying it, which helps it spread better.

The Science Behind the Main Ingredient:ย This serum uses a bio-synthetic form of arbutin. It’s used at an impressively high 2% concentration in this serum… It’s literally the second ingredient after water! #veryimpressed ๐Ÿ‘Œ๐Ÿพย Arbutin works by blocking tyrosinase, the enzyme that is activated by sun exposure or injury/irritation that nudges your melanocytes (the specialized skin cells responsible for melanin production) into maximum overdrive. Tyrosinase is the cause of PIH, age spots, freckles, sun damage, etc.

Additional Info: According to Truth in Aging, arbutin promotes lightening/brightening and an overall even skin tone, helping to counteract the effects of tyrosinase on the skin. While researching alpha arbutin, I read a study entitled “Inhibitory effects of alpha-arbutin on melanin synthesis in cultured human melanoma cells and a three-dimensional human skin model” and it excitedly proved that alpha-arbutin is a safe and highly effective ingredient for skin lightening. (You can find the full study hereย in case you’re interested #skinnerd ๐Ÿค“). This is in comparison to other dodgy skin lightening ingredients (like hydroquinone), which has been linked to a horrible skin disorder called Ochronosis.

no no
No thank you ๐Ÿคฎ

So enough technical shit ๐Ÿ˜‚… Does it work?? YES MAMAAAAA! I’ve been using this serum for almost a year now #holyshit ๐Ÿคฏ. Coupled with my various acid rotations, I’ve definitely noticed a great reduction in the darkest/stubborn PIH on my face since I’ve starting using it ๐Ÿ˜€

Different lighting (natural vs LED) but the results are pretty distinct IMHO ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿฝ

If you have really heavy pigmentation it may take a couple of bottles to see dramatic results… So about 3 months I’d say ๐Ÿค” but totally worth the wait ๐Ÿ˜‹

If you suffer from PIH or uneven skin tone, I definitely recommend you try this serum. You must use it EVERYDAY to see results however #consistencyiskey ๐Ÿ— I’m sooooo in lurve with this shit… As you can see, I BOUGHT 5 BACKUPS to avoid running out anytime soon #obsession ๐Ÿคช๐Ÿ˜‚ It’s really another amazing product from The Ordinary that I’ll keep in my routine 5everrrrrr ๐Ÿ˜

You can buy it straight from Deciem for $8.90…. it’s one of the best tyrosinase inhibitors you can buy, especially for the price. I can’t recommend it enough!!!
